I just finished tuning up my bike for this summer this last weekend. Everything was in good shape but it took some time to get the clearance for the disc brakes correct.
I have a 06 Specialized Rockhopper. I have changed out/ upgraded the handlebars, seat, bottom bracket, front casette, rear cassette, chain, crank set, front and rear derailleurs, shifters, and brake levers. Probably more modified then stock. My next changes are front fork maybe a Fox (i am a rock shox guy but fox has a good rep in other sports), and brake upgrade. This is my baby.
I also have an early 80's Cannondale. It was a prototype and is a bit weird. It has a 24" wheel in the back and 26" in the front. Has an oval 1st drive gear which allows for more chain on the gear while the force is being applied to the peddle. Also has a stupid rear braking system I don't even know the name of, from dia comp, the posts are below the rim on the rear. It's a type of cantaleiver brake that isn't a v brake or a horseshoe so I'm baffled. Doesn't work worth ***; so I've got a friend fabricating a mount for the rear for a disc brake. This bike is my project, all in peices in boxes and the frame
I'll post pics as soon as I have a photo bucket account.
ilikepie:Wow, your cdale has the dreaded biopace chainring AND the chainstay mounted mud catcher..er..brake. Crazy mix of bad ideas.
Ah you know the name of it, biopace, lol. nicely done. Except the rear brake isn't on the chain stay, it's on the seat stay but the mount themselves are above the brake pads themselves, closer to the seat than the rim. (my bad I said below the rim, in the earlier post) The V brake style is mounted on the seat stay but below the pads. I hope that is clearer.
I'd say don't go to the 9 speed, soulslider. It is more of a pain than the extra gear is worth. I think there is a maximum amount of gears you can have before there starts to be issues, i think 8 speeds is the max.
just my $.02

Really not upgrading for the extra gears, but the only cassettes left for 8 speed are lower grade or on eBay. I haven't put any money into my mt bike in atleast 7 years except for tubes, tires, middle ring and a chain. I don't mind shelling out for the upgrade since I love my bike and would rather just upgrade now. Thanks for the input guys,

I totally agree it's lame to be forced to upgrade as what's an extra gear really gonna change? But in the end, you'll hardly ever notice a difference. Roadies are starting to run 10's now....that's just mind bottling.
I do find that it is a little bit more alignment issues and other little problems with the 9 speed. I really don't mow how different it is from the 8 spd so I don't know why it's an "upgrade". Geezus, 10's eh...I wonder if they are leaving the chain the same width.
