Silverton Mtn--early Jan--unguided riding? Worth it?

Hey, my homies and I usually ride Utah every Jan--early on in the month. This year I am thinking before I head up there that I hit up Silverton, CO. Wondering if anyone has been out there and done the unguided riding they offer during select times? It looks pretty sick---hows the mtn?

I have some friends who've been there and said it's sick. I have not been so I cannot comment on the mountain, but I can comment on the weather. January tends to be a good month, but like most of us know winter is a strange season and you never know what you're going to get. For the price I think you can't go wrong...you are a little more limited with what terrain you can access unguided, but all in all I think you'll have fun.
You can actually get a pretty good idea of the mountain if you use Google Earth.

SIlverton is incredible, steep and deep (if its a good snow year). NO groomers, no park, one lift. You have to sign a waiver. I had a guide so that was a plus got to see the good parts, i would suggest getting one. Not a typical experience on the mountain rugged backcountry feeling.

Hit or miss. I went last year and had to make reservations. Then it didn't snow for the 12 days before I got there. Then it got windy. $150 for 3 chunky runs and a pint of PBR in a smelly bus.

Yeah its tough, Utah is always so damn good. I think I will play it by sight and check the snows--if they look good I will go. If not, well, we'll see.

If you do go for the unguided riding make a reservation. There are some threads over on Tetongravity.com worth searching for and reading through.

I rode Silverton last March. The snow sucked - they had a dry spell, so everything was crusty, especially up top. But in spite of that, still good snow in the trees. So with good snow, that place would be epic. So steep. Bring your A game.
I'd recommend the guided approach. They will show you good spots.
