so i rode the mod most of last year and agree, it's sick all around, total fun board and surprisingly kills it on the steep steep mtn riding along with being a super fun jib board with sick pop and stability when cruisin. only place it lacks is in the chop, you know those serious bumps coming out of freshies, it's horrible because its lightweight and tosses you around like a little bit@$.

anyway, from your review of the notch i'm stoked to pick one up, and 07/08 model is super discounted right now. i really do want a pow board so that my legs are lovin me. but i'm worried of 2 things, it only comes in 2 sizes and for a pow board i would usually get something a bit longer than 158 being thats what my mod is, what size mod and notch were you riding? also, overall i'm concerned around the versatility since i ride everything and rarely just will hit lines all day but am in the trees, park and steep. you seemed to find it versatile but i mean can you throw 1s on that thing?

you can if you're good, or going slow, but landing in fresh snow backwards on a tapered board is challenging to say the least

I rode a 158 Notch and a 156 Agent this past year and without a doubt, these are not interchangeable boards. Agent....well I think we've all read about the Agent so I won't get into that. I would say that the review of the Notch in this thread is fairly accurate. I would never think of the Notch as a replacement for my Agent though (or the Mod in your case). Just keep the Notch as a board that you ride when there's tons of fresh snow on a big mountain. HAving a tapered Pow board can make your day if the conditions are right.

Word.  A tapered board can really make your day when it comes to riding fresh.  My buddies that rode with me on pow days on standard boards had to follow my tracks sometimes to build up speed again where I could just keep charging.

Pow boards are a definite in my quiver.

So true.  I have no problem cruising groomers switch, but I usually eat sh1t in the pow.  I definitely prefer rocker over taper for switch pow forays.

Im trying to figure out what size Notch to get.  Im 5'11" 180lbs and typically in the past I have rode an old 160 Custom, recently switched to a 158 Custom last year.  I typically hit trees and stashes in the morning and groomers later in the day.  Would the 158 be too small for me considering the taper?  Should I go bigger or with a Roost or Malolo?  Just looking for a good powder stick, any help would be appreciated.

Do you plan to go with a standard Notch or the rockered version?

Either way I'd go with a 158.  I have ridden both the standard and rockered versions in a 158 and I'm pretty much the same size as you.  I find they float quite similar, the big difference though is that the rockered version is more playful.  The standard version has the short tail and is quite stiff so you don't get as much pop nor  as much play as you do with the rockered version.

If you want something stiff and more of a missile go with the standard.  If you want something more playful, yet kills the pow (and I mean no leg pain ever) go with the rockered (and you won't get leg pain with either....the design makes riding pow easy as a breeze with both).
