TAHOE Boys--need winter driving/road advice for road trip.

Ok, I am planning out a road trip from BroCal to Tahoe and back. I am going to Sierra Summit in central Cal for 2 days, then driving north to Dodge Ridge for a day, then up to Tahoe for a day at Kirkwood and the finally a day at Diamond Peak--then back home.

Question is--as soon as we leave Dodge Ridge--how should we get up to Tahoe--obviously we're gonna drive back down the mtn to hwy 49--then what?

Do we head up the 49 to hwy 88 and onto Tahoe--is the 88 open during winter? Or do we have to head all the way up to the 50?

And is it a good idea to stay on the 49 as we head north from Dodge Ridge or should we go west over to hwy 99--I know the 99 is a lot speedier than the 49. Not sure if it is worth going all that way west just to then head north--perhpas this cancels it all out.

Thanks in advance for the heads up.

some of those roads are closed for the winter.

Do it the "longer way". You'll reduce the risk of not being able to go at all.

one question, though: If you're going to Kwood all the way to tahoe, why the f@ck are you going to diamond peak? Why not Heavenly (on the way to incline) or Homewood (close to incline) or Northstar (close to incline) or Sierra (on the way to incline)?

Ha Ha--I knew I would have to field q's on my choice of odd resorts. Its all about the cash guy.

Here's the deal--we're gonna get of them Tahoe cards--they give you a $10 ticket to Sierra Summit, a $10 ticket to Dodge Ridge, a $10 ticket to Diamond Peak and a free ticket to Kirkwood. All for $50--cant beat it.

I am doing two other big trips this year--Utah for 5 days and Jackson Hole for 3 days--so I needed to plan a trip that was hella cheap and this is the best scam I could come up with--those other trips are gonna max me out.

SO yeah, they're not exactly the creme de la creme of resorts (Kirkwood excepted) but hey, if we hit them with some El Nino powder-I'm sure I will be loving life. If not, I got Utah a couple of weeks later and that place is usually fun.

Thanks for the info--the 99 it is!

    You can have fun ANYWHERE.

My bad for forgetting that (I shouldn't have, because I've spent epic pow days on hills with 2 lifts and still had a blast).

If you can have fun for 10 bucks, DO IT!

Good deal on those $10 tickets, but your going to spend an extra $100 on gas, not to mention dodge ridge and sierra summit are pretty small.

The idea guy is called ROAD TRIP----look it up--its called getting away from your home mtn. All the resorts are on the way up to Tahoe--so I would be driving right past them anyways. So what if they're small resorts? $10 to check out some new places. As I said-I got two big trips going this year to Utah and Jackson Hole--so spacing the $$ out.

I've had some of my best days at small resorts--give me 1500ft vertical and 2 feet of pow over 3000 ft and a few inches.

    Comprende?

Skeezy, not to be a downer or anything but seriously look at the map. Sierra Summit is 70 miles one way from the 5, and the drive from Dodge Ridge to Kirkwood if the back roads are closed would be almost 5 hours! Im just saying, your going to spend a lot of time and money in car and gas. I would say hit up Sierra Summit if there was some pow, and same with Dodge Ridge, but getting from dodge to kwood would be a hell of a time in the pow. Map your road trip on google maps and see really how far everything is. Where you planning on staying? Good luck!

Re: TAHOE Boys--need winter driving/road advice for road trip.

A lto of time and money in car and gas? Wtf? Have you ever gone on a raod trip guy--thats pretty much the definition of a road trip!
70 miles from the 5--yeah--thats why I am not taking the 5 all the way up there, I am taking the 99, then cutting over onto the 50 or the 88.  Unless its deep pow, the 50 will be open--and anyway thats the risk you take whenever you drive in snow--there's always the chance of f*ckups and delays.
As for the drive---on the afternoon after riding Dodge Ridge--leave about 3--get into south lake Tahoe at 9 pm. No big deal. The longest stretch I will drive will be 5 hrs --at least on the way up--maybe the drive home we might go commando.
We're staying in my cab over camper in my Dodge Diesel (21mpg) with all the amenities as well as a couple of nights in a motel.
$28 Sierra Summit ticket, $10 Sierra Summit ticket, $10 Diamond Peak, Free Dodge Ridge ticket and Free Kirkwood ticket. Thats less than $50 for 5 days lift ticket brah!
The rest is gas and food.
Cant go wrong guy, a weeks skiing for $300. Cmon admit it, its unbeatable. Road trippin on the cheap.
Dont worry you're not being a downer here, there's no down in this town!
