Disadvantages of riding a wide board?

Hey all, im picking out a new board for this season and im not sure if i should go wide or not. I wear a size 10 boot, rode a Salomon Tempest Wide last year (total POS) and my toes still hung over a little bit.

With a size 10 boot what kind of waist width should i be looking for? Are there any major disadvantages to riding a board thats a little too wide?

    Thanks for the help!

With a size 10 boot, you should be able to fit on normal boards that have a slightly wider width. If not, you could buy a Mid-Wide board. Wide is a little too much for size 10

What is an ideal waist width for a guy with size 10s? I think the board i rode last year was maybe a 260mm? It was kind of a tight fit even with my bindings set back a little.

The wide that im looking at is 257mm waist width, is that too much board for me? I assumed that it would be better to play it safe and have more room, but i could be completely wrong. The standard size version of the board is 248mm.

    Thanks for the help

There are no disadvantages per se, what you should be asking is if a wide board is right for you.

You have size 10 boots, which is generally considered not to be wide board territory, but each boot is different. The reason you go to a wide board is because your toes/heels hang over to such an extent that you have to worry about them digging into the snow when you turn. If your board is too wide though, you'll not be able to quickly get edge to edge, and the board will feel sluggish and difficult to manage.

With your size boots, you shouldn't need a wide board. Burton makes a line of boards that they call mid-wides, it's waist width being between regular boards and wide boards. These boards are said to be best for 10.5 boots, so look at them. But depending on your stance angles and width, you should probably have no problem with any of the regular boards.

Ill check out some mid-wides right now, thanks dude.

I kind of had my eyes on the 2010 Forum Image to go with my 2009 Burton P1.1's that i literally just ordered 10 minutes ago. It looks like a solid board for a reasonable price ($319).

I didnt want to spend too much on a board because i ride on the icy east coast all winter (MD, PA). The waist width is 257mm for the wide, and 250mm for the standard, so not TOO much of a difference. Im kind of a noob, do you think that 7mm will affect the response that much?

It probably won't, but you would have been fine with the 250mm waist.

Where in MD/PA do you ride? I grew up riding Wisp and 7 Springs.

Small world. I ride Wisp a few times every year, ive yet to make it out to 7 Springs but i plan on it this year. Wisp is about 3.5 hours from me here in Northern VA.

I rode at Whitetail about 10 times last winter, occaisionally Roundtop or Liberty. Those 3 are only an hour and a half away from me so its easy to go up for the day during the week. In my opinion Whitetail is better, but they are all pretty weak. Ive been to Massanutten a few times too.

There arent many decent mountains closeby, Wisp blows all of the other places i mentioned out of the water though. Where do you ride nowadays?

I usually hit up roundtop once or twice because they often open up a week or two before the other mountains in the area. Only a couple trails open but by mid december im itchin to ride anthing.

Never been to Tremblant but pretty much everyone i know has. I hear it gets really crowded but its a definite upgrade from everything around here. They have a bar half way down the mountain so you can stop in for some booze to warm you up. Cant go wrong there.
