Old guy must replace his 2000 FL Project...advice please?

OK, so my storage locker at my appartment is now empty thanks to a tennant who was evicted and decided that while he was cleaning out his own locker, he may as well take care of his neighbours too.

In that locker was my beloved FL Project 162 and 157. Before buying the FL's my previous Burton's were a couple of Customs (155 and 159) but I found they were a bit too soft. When the FL's came out I was hooked and never tried another board.

Almost a decade later, board technology has changed a lot and I have no clue what the different lines are like now.

I am an experienced rider who spends most of the time freeriding in various conditions; I prefer powder days at Baker but I often get stuck with hardpack on the local North Vancouver mountains. I would say about 35-40% of the time I am doing park or slope style riding, but with no rails as they scare the crap out of me (cracked my tail bone on one many years ago and that was enough!).

I do ride fast though, regardless of the surface and that is where I found the early Custom's to be lacking as they couldn't hold their edge well enough.

I did some lurking on this board and it seems like a CustomX or Custom V Rocker would work for me, but I may be able to do OK with a T6 as well. My FL's were directional (core and shape) and I had no problem's riding switch so I don't think I need a twin.

I would appreciate any feedback or advice on whether I am on the right track in terms of a CustomX, Custom V Rocker, T6 type board or if I am missing the mark completely. I just want one board this time around as I don't compete anymore (used to do banked slalom and boardercross) and just want to keep it simple. :)

    Thanks,
    Bradley

you might want to take a look at jussi 159. stiffer than the custom, but still playful and fun

Custom X is basically what the FL became (FL to Dragon to Custom X).

what you SHOULD do is go to a demo ASAP. Doesn't just have to be burtons.

The capita BSOD might be worth a look at in addition to those already mentioned. What would be best for you, though, would be to ride as many boards as you can. Things have came a long way in the past 10 years.

I rode the FL 62 back in the day.  Fun board, very light (for the time).  I found that over the years I have become much more lazy and dont ride nearly as hard as I used, so I have downsized and gotten softer boards.  The Custom X would be good, the Jussi is a solid fun board.  The T6 is something you should def demo first.  Even take a look at the Flying V if you are considering a rockered board.  Going to a pure rocker board will be a night/day diff coming off a board like the FL.  There are other companies that make really good boards, so look around.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

I have heard some positive things on the new Lib Tech's and their reverse camber, as well as some other cool things. I like the concept of demo'ing a bunch of boards but to be honest, I don't ride as much as I used to so when I do go I would rather enjoy my time with my friends rather than dealing with demo's.

Hearing that the Custom X is comparable with the FL I will likely make that one of my top options, along with the Lib Tech BX Dark Series since a friend of mine raves about his. I know what to expect (more or less) from the Custom X so I will try my friend's Lib as soon as Baker opens (might be soon too!!!) and then just pick one. :)

The whole channel thing is a little freaky to me. I remember seeing Rev boards use the channel and I thought it would cause of a lot of toe and heel binding lift, but I guess there aren't any problems so I will just have to adapt if I do end up with a Burton.

Sorry to hear about your boards.  I've been using my 2000 FL 62 and loving it, but this year got 2009 162 & 159 T6's.  I haven't had a chance to try either one yet, but that Lib Dark Series looks like it might be even more of a quiver of one.  There's so much more choices & tech to choose from now from 2000, its dizzying.

I own a T6 and love it but don't really see it in the park as its a bit too stiff. I think the Custom X is the way to go for a true all mountain board if you are going to go with Burton.

That sucks man!  I worked for Burton's distributor for a few years back then.  As soon as I saw these boards come in I had to have one and love it still to this day.  Every year I look at the new boards and wonder which one would ride like my FL without breaking the bank but I just can't bring myself to retire it.
