tylor:al merricks are real good.
Morledge:I'll be in Kauai in May. I've only long boarded, and although delightfully fun, I want a more aggressive board. I am 6' 170lbs and don't mind taking a thrashing. Probably blunt tip 6'7"+ three set fins in the rear.
Go with a bodyboard.
Just kidding.
I am 5'10" 180. I ride a merrick ksmall 6'2"..surftech model so it floats pretty well. Hopefully you'll get an early south swell. I was there last summer on the first big south of the season. I stayed on Poipu. If you walk out from Brennecke's at Poipu beach park and walk towards the right (maybe 100_ yards) there is a deeper water fun break that's easy and breaks both ways. Another mile or 2 down the road there is a restaurant next to Prince Kuhio condos....good south well spot, but that whole area can be a bit shallow at times. By the way, buy "The Ultimate Kawaii Guidebook". Has every thing you could want to do in Kauai. Surf all morning and then go hiking, snorkling and see the island the rest of the day. Go snorkling up at Ke'e beach, Tunnels, and Hideaway. Take a half day boat along the Napali coast (or kayak it for an amazing all day adventure). Tons of stuff to do, but definitely get that book, you won't be disappointed. Just make sure you give your board plenty of padding for the air travel...my board cracked a bit on the way.
