    The Official Skateboarding Thread

thought about giving it a try.
is it like almost impossible to learn when you are a chickenshit like me?
    looks like it's damn hard.
that whole not attached thing creeps me out a bit.
    so yeah.

    any advice?

    Re: skateboarding.

just push around on it for a bit, get used to it...

try "hopping" off the board a few times, so you can get used to the feeling of it shooting out from under you

if you're going to learn a trick, first learn how to do an ollie

back foot on the tail, front foot right behind (or slightly on) your front trucks

pop the tail down, jumping up, and slide the top part of your front foot up the board to "grab" the board into the air

once you're in the air, you want to try to level your board by bringing up your back foot until it's level with your front foot.

try to keep your back foot hovered above your tail.  put it down, and try again.

    Re: skateboarding.

It's hard as hell to learn.  You've got to enjoy doing it for sure or else you'll just get pissed at yourself for sucking so much and give it up.  I can skate all day and not fall once, but when you start trying to progress yourself at it you'll get the shit beat out of you.  I don't know, i've got a love/hate relationship with skating.  I love it because it's rad and when i'm on it it and landing stuff it feels good.  But then I slam four times back to back and it hurts to get out of bed in the morning.  It's not like snowboarding where you can fall and slide out of it for days.  But it's all relative I guess too.  I'm not going a hundred miles an hour up fifty feet in the air on my skateboard.

the frustration thing is the thing that worries me. not having the patience that i need time to learn. and i hate the idea of getting hurt.

    Re: skateboarding.

I suck at skateboarding and think is meh, I would like it much more if I was better.

But on the other hand I love just cruising around on my longboard.

    Re: skateboarding.

I used to skate all the time... highschool rolled around and all my friends bailed on skating, and it just wasn't fun to do alone.

after quite some time out, it's too much to get back into it... it is NOT like riding a bike.

    Re: skateboarding.

you should'nt have that much of a problem learning to ride around on a skateboard but tricks are harder to grasp.  Longboards on the other hand are way better, you can carve and my favorite thing is doing spins on the board. you will probably like longboarding more because it feels closer to snowboarding but if you are getting a skateboard than just learn on that.

    Re: skateboarding.

    meh
skatingboarding is very different from snowboarding
it took me forever just to learn how to fricking ollie, but once you get it, it clicks and you start getting better
but ya, i hate getting hurt too.
not exactly like snow...concrete hurts like hell
i kinda want to try freebording...i know...it looks gay....but it still looks fun

    Re: skateboarding.

I remember stepping on a skateboard when I was like 12 and I couldn't ollie. Not that I spend much time trying.

Sounds like I will want a longboard but if I get a used skateboard I will just cruise with that, test that out and if I like it, I might just buy myself a longboard for xmas or something :)

    Re: skateboarding.

It took 2 weeks to learn to ollie and one of my friends still hasnt learned because he's to afraid, but he'll bomb a hill with me anytime. weird.

and i know what you mean about concrete not being snow every time i would go to the skatepark i would fall on the same spot on my hip and knee, have had bruise for the whole summer.

    Re: skateboarding.

you cant count it as an ollie just because you got off the ground.

if you can ride and snap an ollie over a couple 2x4s then you can say you can actually ollie.. and sure, thats not much, but its enough to where you cant just get lucky and make it every time.

it took me years to really get great ollies.  good, popped, controlled, poked ollies.  its not an easy trick at all, even though its the most basic trick of them all.
