Looking to apply/maybe go there next year.... whats the deal with the drinking thing though?  I am not going to lie I can't go to a school and not be able to drink/party at all lol, even if the surrounding area's riding is so good.


Is it a dry campus/whats the deal with the whole Utah+alcohol thing?

Sounds like you're going to be a freshman so you'll probably be living in the dorms.  You might be surprised to know that there isn't a single university in the United States that condones or allows underage drinking, especially on campus or in the "privacy" of your dorm.

I went to the U of U and have some friends that went there as well.

You're not supposed to have booze in the dorms, but it's not like it doesn't happen. I have a great story about a buddy that really overdid it drinking on campus that I can tell if you're interested. Most students there either join a fraternity or move off campus after their first year and then it doesn't matter what the campus rules are as you'll be off campus.

I'm gonna be a sophomore out there this year. Yea its a dry campus, does that stop anyone? NO. Get a dorm in Gateway 803 or 804. Get to know your RA. My RA caught us drinking twice, and charged us a six pack each time. One time when he wasn't on duty he came and warned us that a group of stricter RA's were doing their rounds. The whole mormon thing was a lil weird at first, but once the snow starts flying you'll get over it real quick.

lol yeah well i do understand that no college campus allows drinking or any of that... but really what i was wondering is - does the whole mormon/mormon rules (and i dont mean to sound ignorant here but i may be) thing affect the partying life of the school? 


Yeah i am sure i will move off campus after freshman year... but do the frats still have those banger parties and are there bars around the campus that all of the college kids chill out at?


And Jvol - whats up with the dorms there? I am going to visit soon but i have heard that the dorms are very new and are really really nice compared to what other schools have to offer... like most rooms have their own bathrooms and such?


Tidbit, I'd love to hear the overage of the drinking on campus story!

A lot of the "Mormons" that go to the U weren't Mormon enough to get into BYU. They're "Jack Mormons" which basically means that when they are around Non-Mormons they tend to drink and do other stuff that the "aren't supposed" to do.

There are plenty of good bars and places around Salt Lake, but the only place in town that you can get into that serves booze if you're under 21 is In The Venue. All of the other bars/clubs you have to be 21 or have a good ID (a real one that looks like you, not a fake) as they are using scanners now at all of them.

The story is pretty funny.... All of the dorms were used during the Olympics for all the athletes to stay in. After that they became dorms for the U of U students to live in, all of these dorms are identical in layout. One of my buddies was at a party and got pretty trashed. He got a ride home and the guy dropped him off at the wrong dorm.

He was so drunk that he didn't realize it, someone was walking out as he walked in so he didn't have to key into the building with his ID. He took a left up the stairs, walked down the hall and went into "his" room. He never locked his dorm room and oddly enough "his" dorm wasn't locked in this dorm either.

He stripped down to his boxers and jumped into bed and there was a girl in it that just started screaming. He jumped up.. tripped and landed on her sweater drying rack and destroyed it and passed out on the floor. The girl ran and got her RA... Whom called Campus Safety to come get him.

He got cited for underage drinking, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct. They didn't give him breaking and entering since the door was unlocked... He had to do 25 hours of community service and replace the sweater rack he broke.  All in all a pretty great drunken story at the U.

I went there. Don't sweat the alcohol thing. It was never a problem. The riding is sooo consistently good. Salt Lake is kind of an arm pit though. Really poor air quality.

When we have an inversion the air quality sucks. Luckily the inversions usually don't last long.

i would agree that there is a greater chance that if you're mormon and go to the U that you drink. whether that makes them "jack" or not.. i dunno.

but i know for a fact that there are plenty of byu drinkers as well. less than any other college i'm sure, but it still goes on.

Yes the rooms are some of the nicest for any university in america. The setup is 2 dorm rooms with a bathroom in between. So you only share the bathroom with three other people.

Man do i have the check this place out... it seems like a great place to go to school because its in salt lake, has great riding all season, is really nice and seems to be alright academically.... now to book the SLC visit haha
